Types of Migraines

When many people think of migraines, they think of a really bad headache. Some even lump all bad headaches together under the "migraine" label. However, migraines are much more complex than that. At Dunn Chiropractic and Acupuncture Natural Health Center of Akron, our chiropractor aims to help you understand your headaches or migraines, so you can pursue an effective form of pain relief that will work for you.

Types of Migraines

If you have known someone who has experienced migraines, and your symptoms are not the same, that does not mean that you are not also suffering from migraines. You might just be experiencing a different type of migraine. Some of these include:

  • Migraine without aura (4-72 hrs) - Common Migraine
  • Migraine with Aura - includes visual disturbances along with other migraine symptoms for up to an hour before a migraine starts
  • Brainstem aura - trouble speaking, double vision, ringing ears or vertigo
  • Migraine without headache-no head pain, just other symptoms
  • Hemiplegic migraine - hemiplegic - weakness on one side of the body, may have visual aura symptoms or pins and needles sensation. May or may not have a headache.
  • Retinal migraine - visual disturbances in one eye
  • Menstrual Migraine - migraines in women that occur with hormonal changes. Up to 19% of women may experience these, and may also get migraines at other times as well
  • Vestibular Migraine - vertigo, dizziness, balance issues -
  • Abdominal Migraine -stomach pain instead of head pain. These are more common in children
  • Status Migraine - more than 72 hrs in duration

Migraine Triggers and Natural Healing Methods

Understanding triggers is a key component of treating migraines. While medications exist for migraines, they do not work for everyone and can cause side effects. The most successful treatments often come when patients get to the bottom of why their migraines are occurring and make the lifestyle choices necessary to reduce their occurrence. Some common triggers to watch for include:

  • Food additives
  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Weather Changes
  • Head and neck injury
  • Hormonal changes
  • Medication
